RIP Checkerboard

Here lies Checkerboard

I first got playing around with gamedev back in middle school. My parents told me I couldn't play too many video games and they wanted to limit my time with them. So I argued making games doesn't count as playing games! I downloaded GameMaker and started making fun things for friends

My cousin had some Neopets McDonald toy with a checkerboard pattern he named, well "Checkerboard". My first 3 games as a middle-schooler were bullet hell shmups staring this character, and I made these games as a gift for him.

  • The first game had only boss fights with desserts that shot back at you
  • The second game was basically the first game but "Mario" themed because I stole art assets from Super Mario Bros for the NES.
  • The 3rd game was the only one that scrolled and had normal enemies. I was just following a tutorial and I remember this one being the most boring.

I gave these games to my cousin. I no longer have copies of these, or any screenshots, so if any copy exists He would have them on the only burned CD, or was it floppy?

I think you can understand why the game Undertale gives me so so so much nostalgia for this time of my life without Toby ever intending this.

Rest in Peace, Checkerboard!
