What is RSS?

RSS is a very simple way of letting people know if your website has updated. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". You can download one of many RSS feed readers and use it to "subscribe" to any website with an RSS feed. Your feed reader will let you know when there is a new update in chronological order. Some social media sites like YouTube have an RSS feed for each creator. You can, if you want to, use RSS to subscribe to YouTubers without having a google account! You can also subscribe to this website using a feed reader. Copy the rss link from the big orange button above into your feed reader to subscribe to this website!

Why RSS?

The internet was never designed to be controlled by a handful of corporations. It was intended that anyone can get some kind of server up and running to serve some web pages. If you want to make information, art, content, or whatever available to people outside of big tech's control and influence, having your own website is the only way to do that. The only realistic way to expect normal people browsing the web to know when an update to one of their favorite website is to have something like RSS.

Yes, for regular people, this is inconvenient. You need to actively design your feed without an algorithm serving you new content. Yes, much of the social media web does not let you get updates via RSS, so a feed reader is probably yet another thing you need to check and update.

But despite that, I am asking you to consider using an RSS feed reader. I am also asking that you consider adding an RSS feed to your own website. You can write your own feed in xml by hand, but I do not recommend that you do that. I don't, I have a plugin generate my feed with the generation of my static site.
